Defra and the Devon Sea Fisheries
would like it to be known to club members that anglers should report
illegal netting if seen, in the rivers or the sea. They can be

8-3-10. The Presentation Night went really well with
100 members and partners turning up. A big thank you to
all for making it a great night.
16-2-10. The boat trip out from Beer was fished last week and
again some nice Pout are still being caught with 5 fish over 3lb being
caught. Best one weighed 3-5-0 for Malc Wheaton. Lean Rice
had another one just over the 3lb and Jim Ogbourne had one of 3lb dead.
Other fish caught included Whiting of which the best was around 2.5lb.
1-2-10. The first boat trip of the year has at last gone out
from Beer with Cyril Newton. Leon's trip enjoyed a day afloat with
plenty of Whiting to 3lb. Other fish caught were Doggies and
Pouting. Best fish of the day went to Leon Rice with a Specimen
Pout of 3-2-8. Best Whiting went to Vinny Strudwick with a fish of
just short of 3lb.
18-1-10. A few fish have now been reported. Mike Spiller
and new member from Sidmouth Bill Cassar went out from Beer with Kim
Aplin on Sunday. Not that nice out there but I suppose it is
January!!! a few whiting, Pout and doggies were caught along with a nice
dab for Mike Spiller. Top three fish of the day were all specimen Pout
with the best at 3-8-0 for Bill, Mike had one of 3-2-0 and Bill again
managed to find another of 3-1-0.
13-1-10. All a bit slow with no one going to sea.
2009
23-12-09. Last weekend saw one of Leons trips out from Beer and
by joe was it cold out there. Everyone caught plenty of tasty
Whiting along with few Doggies and a few late Mackerel. Best
Whiting of the day fell to Jim Ogbourne who had one of 2.5lb.
3-12-09. Has anyone been ? the weather is awful still.
26-10-09. The monthly boat trip again was good last weekend
with some good Bream caught. Best of the bunch was Vinny Strudwick
with a belter of 4-1-8 and there were a few more well over 3lb.(see
gallery)
28-9-09. The monthly boat trip with Leon has just taken
Plaice and I here it was a Bream Fest. Lots of Black Bream
caught (well over 60) also the odd nice jumbo Mackerel with Jim
Ogbourne having one of 1-15-0.
Also at the weekend was the Lyme Bay Boat competition. The
event was hosted by us this year and Steve Butler and Mike Spiller made
the team up. A good day was had by all with plenty getting
caught. Honiton came out on the top spot with West Bay second Beer
third and Axminster fourth. (see gallery)
17-9-09. Around 10 members travelled down to Salcombe
for the small boat event held there each month. A fresh
N/E wind made conditions a tadge choppy. A good mixture
of fish were caught. Pete Wilkins young lad (Billy) came
home on 4th spot with a nice Garfish of 1-6-0 and a Dogfish of
2.5LBs. Steve Butler had the best of a few Trigger Fish
caught at 1-13-0.
7-9-09. The monthly trip has taken place out from Beer
and again some good fish were caught. Nice Bream and big
Mackerel featured in the catches.
!8-8-09. Leon's monthly trip has been out from Beer last week
and again the fishing was steady with Bream, Dogs, Pout, Scad,
Mackerel and Gurnard caught. Best fish of the day went to
Mike Spiller with specimen Red Gurnard of 1-10-0.
Vinny Strudwick also had a specimen Red Gurnard too of 1-4-0.

17-8-09. Beer Regatta boat competition has taken place and a
good day was had by club members. In first place was Terry
Hartnell who scored 398% with 9 species of fish(WELL DONE TERRY) runner
up went to Tom Travers (WELL DONE TOM) with 8 species and 383%, Tom also
had a specimen Bull Huss of over 10lb. Best Bream went to Mike
Spiller with a fish of 3-4-8. Terry also won the Sean and Ali cup
for the most number of species (9) (see gallery)
Pete Riggs recently fished out with Mike Spiller from Lyme Regis in
Mike's boat and Pete landed a tasty Cod of 6-10-0.
6-7-09. A few members have been out on the boats at
Minehead with a few nice fish showing at the weekend.
Carol Pike had a few Rays of the Small Eyed and Blonde variety
also taken were a few Conger to around the 20lb size.
29-6-09. A few members on your behalf (mostly due to Dr
Kim and Si of Exmouth/Honiton club) have talked to the owners of
Branscombe car park and organised a pass system for cheap
parking. A car permit is available from Mike Spiller (car
reg number is needed) this will then allow you to park that car
at Branscombe from 6pm - 6am for £2 at anytime of the year.
A big thank you must go to all who helped get this permit system

25-6-09. The 2 nd heat of the Lively Lady boat
competition took place last Sunday and I believe the fishing was
again a bit slow. Beer took a small lead to this event
from round 1 (20%) On the day the team from Honiton done
well and secured a win of some 200% with each angler recording
their best fish of different species. Well done to John,
Dave, Leon and Vinny.
15-6-09. Leons last boat trip went out from Beer last
Saturday with 'Blue Lady'. Fishing was a bit slow but
there was a couple of Cod caught for Pete Riggs (6lb) (see
gallery) and Dave
Baugh (4lb) . Also some of the first Bream were caught out
from Beer with around 20 being caught. Best Bream on the
day went to Mike Spiller with a fish of 2-12-0.
Mike Spiller and Terry Hartnell fished out of Mike's boat last
Sunday. Again cod were targeted but only 2 were taken, both for
Terry with his best at 8lb (see gallery) A couple more Bream were
caught in the afternoon in the 1.5lb class.
12-6-09. Reports from Chris Mills up near Weymouth having a
good day out on his boat from Weymouth. Chris reports of a good
number of Cod up to 14lb on small shads. (see gallery)
11-5-09. The summer boat competition has just taken
place out from Minehead. 14 members filled the two boats
owned by Dave James. Conditions were very good with light
East winds and sunny. Fish caught included Conger,
Doggies, Whiting, Smoothounds, Blonde Ray, Thornback Ray, Small
Eyed Ray and Spotted Ray. This event was run on points per
species, so no fish had to be kept other than for the table.
There was tie for first place on 45 points (more than 10
Doggies,4 Ray and 1 Smoothound each) for Chris Mills and Mike
Spiller, each receiving vouchers provided by Neil at Otter
Country Sports. Runner up was John Stanford on 41 points.
The last twp prizes went to the best fish on each boat as
decided by the skippers, these were Neil Loomes with a
Smoothound of 12lb and Chris Mills with a Blonde Ray.

6-5-09. The monthly boat trip out from Beer organized
by Leon has taken place at the weekend. Again the fishing
was a bit slow with fish like Pout, Wrasse, Pollack, Mackerel,
Doggies and a couple of nice Conger. Best Conger was for
Leon Rice with a fish of 35lb (WAS).
27-4-09. A few members went to fish from Minehead with
Marcus James on the 'Mary Ellen' boat. A good day was had
by all with around 16 ray being caught (Blondes, Thornback and
Small Eyed) Best fish of the day was a Starry Smouthound
of 12-12-0 for John 'Jammy' Stanford.(see gallery)
20-4-09. A few Plaice seem to be coming from Dartmouth
out on the Skerries bank. Mike Spiller recently fished
aboard the charter boat 'Gemini' and landed a few Plaice to a
best size of 2-1-0. All the fish being caught on a
cocktail of worm, prawn and squid strip.
14-4-09. Club junior Toby Lawrence-King went out with
his dad recently from Lyme Regis and landed a tasty Cod of
nearly 5lb (see gallery)
Leon has just had his monthly boat trip out with Cyril, a nice day
weather wise but the fishing was poor. Best fish of the day was a
Cuckoo Wrasse of 1-3-0 for Mike Spiller.
17-3-09. Leons monthly boat trip has just taken place and it
was also the first heat of the Lively Lady boat event.
Fishing on this fine day was a bit slow with everyone struggling
to catch decent fish. The best fish caught was for James
Manley who had a Cuckoo Wrasse of 1-5-0 and 1-3-0 (see gallery)
At the weigh-in Beer just piped Honiton for the Lively Lady by
some 16%, next heat will be in June.
Other fish caught on the same day by members who were out in
private boats, Steve Butler had a few Pollack at the wrecks around the
10lb mark.
12-3-09. The last of the training nights has now taken place
at the Honiton Motel. Attendance at all three nights was
not too bad ranging from around a dozen and up to twenty members
turning up. Many things were covered like reels and leader
knots, shore and boat rig making, weight selection and last
night bait cutting was shown to all. Thanks to all that
turned up and helped on these nights.
23-2-09. Mike Spiller has been out in his own boat
recently along with Terry Hartnell from Lyme Regis. Best
fish of the day fell to Mike's bait with a nice Pouting of
3-4-0. Other fish caught included Pollack, Whiting,
Doggies and Wrasse.
The Lively Lady evening has just taken place at the Social Club at
Beer. A good turn out from both clubs saw a great night of Darts,
Skittles and a quiz. It all got a bit tight on the results near
the end with Honiton winning the night by one pin in the skittles,
thanks to jammy Jimbo !!!
16-2-09. Leons monthly trip has just taken place on the
boat 'Blue Lady' out from Beer. Conditions were good but
the fishing was slow with plenty of small Whiting and a few
Pout, Wrasse, Dabs and Mackerel. Best fish of the day was
a Whiting for Craig Nation of 3lb dead. (see gallery)

29-1-09. The first of three training evenings took place last
night at the motel. Around 20 members took part with leader knots
and reel tuning on the first table and rig making and weight selection
on the next table up. Craig (squadron leader) Nation was also
there on the end providing some simple DVD's on fishing.
6-1-09. The monthy boat trip has just taken place out from Beer
and some good Whiting were caught, also caught were Pout, Doggies and
even a few Mackerel. Best Whiting of the day weighed 3-3-0 and
Mike Spiller managed a specimen Pout of 3-2-8.
9-12-08. Leon has just had his December boat comp out from
Beer. A nice day was had by all with plenty of Whiting to up
around 2.5 lbs. Other fish caught was Doggies and a nice few Mackerel,
with the biggest at 1.5 lbs.
25-11-08. The boys have been out again with Cyril from Beer on
'Blue Lady' They all seemed to catch some nice table Whiting and I
believe plenty of jumbo sized Mackerel and a few Garfish. (see picture

20-10-08. Westward winners again, that is the news from Sundays
match. The whole team fished well with 3 zone wins on the shore.
Conditions were not too good for the boat and shore match but we came
out on top with a massive 55 points. Sidmouth came in at 2nd spot
some 20 points behind. WELL DONE TEAM
30-9-08. It seems every man and hid dog were out at the weekend
with good weather over both days. A number of members towed their
own small boats up to West Bay for their open boat event. Martin
Travers done very well picking up something like 3rd or 4th spot.
Carol Pike also done well whilst out with Archie, she managed the prize
for the highest number of species (9).
Leon also had his monthly boat trip out from Beer with Cyril Newton,
good conditions again had with it near perfect for a good days
fishing. They had plenty of Bream all day, Leon had the best at 3-5-0
and there were also a few Cod reported for Matt to 10lb ish.
On the same day Mike Spiller and Terry Hartnell fished out from Beer
with Kim Aplin on 'Sambe' this event was the Lyme Bay boat event hosted
this year by Beer and District SAA. The event this year was run on
a points basis and Mike And Terry done us proud winning by some 100
points. Runner up were Beer with Axminster close behind.
Notable fish on this trip were Bream of 3-6-8 for Terry and a specimen
Red Gurnard for Mike of 1-6-0. Thanks must go to Beer for a good
days fishing, with well over 100 Bream caught and most of them released
!!!
18-9-08. Around 8 members have just returned from the weekend
comp at Salcombe for small boats and some good fish were landed by all
113 anglers taking part. Rob had a good Wrasse of 4lb, see picture
on the home page. Tom Travers finished in 6th spot with a good
Cuckoo Wrasse and a nice Small Eyed Ray. Carol Pike also had the
best by a lady award with her Bull Huss of 10lb and a Wrasse of 3.5lb
The Summer boat event has taken place out from Minehead on Dave
James's two boats. 12 members fished the event with most catching
plenty of fish, like Huss, Smoothounds, Ray and Dogs. Top rod on
the day went to Steve Butler who ended up with the most points on the
day.
26-8-08. Second leg of the Lively Lady has just taken place out
from Beer with Kimmer. Not a good day by all accounts and not a
lot caught either. Beer managed to get their nose in front from
the start and came out winning by a small margine, even though we had a
small lead going into the match. Best fish was for Les Bradbeer
with a Cuckoo Wrasse of around 140z. Congratulations to Beer again
for winning this competition.
7-8-08. Leons monthly boat trip with Cyril has just taken
place, with a nice day had by all. A few Bream seem to around now
out on the reef marks with most anglers aboard catching some with the
best at around 2.5lb. Other fish caught included Bull Huss to 8lb,
Scad, Wrasse, Doggies, Mackerel and Pout.
30-7-08. A few members fished at West Bay last weekend at their
2 day boat open. For a change some good weather was forecast which
came with some good catches for all the competitiors there over the
weekend. 3 small hsac club boats attended with Carol and Archie
pike picking up some prizes for the Sunday. A couple of Sidmouth
members done very Well, Wayne ? had the second best fish on Sunday and J
Trivett had the highest number of different species over the 2 days and
this won him a new colour sounder for his boat.
16-6-08. A few members joined Mike Spiller at Minehead at the
weekend and fished aboard Marcus James boat the 'Mary Ellan' The
weather was kind for a change and the fishing was good too, fish caught
included Conger, Bull Huss, Dogfish, Thornbacks, Tope and Smoothounds.
Best fish of the day went to Matt Kerslake with a nice Bull Huss of
11-1-0. Mike Spiller had a few Smoothounds the best was a Starry
type of 9-9-0 and a common of 8-13-0 and the best Tope was one of 20lb
for Rob Dominy which was a good achievement by Rob as he landed it on
10lb line ! (should be some pictures up on the gallery soon)
9-6-08. Some boats got out at the weekend, a few small boats
fished out from West Bay for their Open 1 day event. Conditions
were good and there was plenty caught including a few small Cod !
Steve Butler done well he won the West Bay Open event with a good size
Cuckoo and LSD, this gave Steve the first prize of £140. Steve was
fishing aboard Tom and Bobs new boat which is a Warrior 165.
Leon also had his monthly event out from Beer, they fished the rough
ground all around they too caught some small Cod plus all the normal
species expected.
27-5-08. Good news from the Lively Lady Team, they have a small
lead to take into the 2nd heat in August. They fished against Beer
in Leons last trip out from Beer a couple of weeks ago. It was a
bit of a slow day but there was enough caught to get in front at last.
Next heat of the Lively Lady event would be in August
Please do not forget that the first heat of
the interclub against Exmouth SAA will take place at Branscombe on the
7th June from 5pm - 11pm. Please note there is new parking charges
there now, but if you ask Mike Spiller for a window sticker you can park
their for £2 for the evening. No sticker and you will pay the
going rate on parking.
6-5-08. Chris Mills, Steve Butler and Russel Boddy recently
fished out from Weymouth for the Black Bream over towards Lulworth area.
Around 40 were caught with most being returned. Best fish of the
day was one of 2-5-0.
17-3-08. Mike Spiller has had the first trip up at Minehead on the
'Mary Ellan'. Plenty of Dogs caught through the day with the odd
Thornback Ray, best fish of the day was Mat Kerslake with his Thorny of
12-1-0 (see gallery)
A few members have ventured up to Weymouth to try for the Plaice but
most trips being blown off due to the weather.
Leons monthly boat trip with Cyril has just taken place and there
were some fair catches on the day. Some good number of Whiting
were caught with the best weighing 3-5-8 for Rob Dominy. Most of
the Whiting were between the 1lb - 2lb mark on the day with a few up
around the 3lb mark. Other fish caught were Pouting, Dogfish and
Mackerel.
27-2-08. Three members of the club attended the Defra RSA
Strategy meeting at the NFSA headquarters on Monday night. We went
along and listened and asked some questions to the meeting. Points
raised were licenses, size and numbers of fish and netting. I ask
now that you read the document and reply with your thoughts by the
31-3-08. Do not let this chance slip by without looking at it !!!.
5-2-08. Were back at last and on line. Many thanks must go to
the website provider that has let us down big time since the middle of
December. But thanks to Varihost we are now up and running again.
Over the last 6 weeks or so the fishing has been fairly good, if you
are lucky enough to get out. A few trips out from Beer on
'Blue Lady' found plenty of Whiting, Mackerel and even a few Garfish !.
Leons last boat trip with Cyril they had plenty of Whiting, Pouting,
Dogs and still a few Mackerel thrown in too. Best fish on the day
was a non member (Craig) who had a specimen Pouting of just over 3lb's.
2007
At the same time some members towed their boats to salcombe to fish in
the 2 day Wyvern small boat event at the weekend. Conditions were
perfect with no wind and everyone could get out to fish the full zone 3
area. Archie and Carol Pike done really well, Archie was in
the lead up to Sunday and was only piped at the post by the winner Danny
Dagger of Teignmouth SAS. Danny caught a Cuckoo Wrasse pf 1-11-2
and a Ballan Wrasse of 3-14-0 (206%)this won him a Suzuki outboard and a
chance to fish the final in Guernsey later this year. Archie
recorded a Blonde Ray of 27-4-0 and a Doggy of 2-6-0 (204%) this won him
a new Lowrance GPS/sounder unit. (see gallery). Carol also done
well she took the prize for the best Pollack and Wrasse at the event and
along with Arch they won the team prize. Pete Wilkins son Tommy
also travelled down to fish with dad, Tommy caught a nice Bull Huss of
11lb enough to win the best junior award. A few club juniors
also fished the competition, Ollie Butler and Daniel Mills fished well,
Ollie had a tidy Blonde Ray to weigh-in too.
24-9-07. Craig has just had a trip out from Beer with our
Cryril on 'Blue Lady'. It was a bit windy for Craigs friends who
had come down from Bristol for the day. There were plenty of Bream
caught and Craig had a nice Ling on the rough ground of 13Lb (see
gallery)
8-10-07. The Lyme Bay boat comp has just taken place out from
West Bay with Carol and Archie fishing for our team. Other teams
included West Bay, Beer and Lyme Regis. The fishing was steady
with Bream, Pout, Dogs, Scad, Mackerel and Wrasse. Congratulations
must go to Arch and Carol as after trying very hard then won the event
for us and so this year we have won the boat and shore versions of the
Lyme Bay events. Positions were :- 1/ Honiton 2/ Beer 3/
West Bay 4/ Lyme. Well done to all who helped win these two
events.
18-10-07. How is this for speed then, Archie and Carol are out
in their boat today and they have each caught their own PB Bass today of
11-14-0 and 11-2-0. What a good day they must be having and there
report and pictures are on the club website before they have got back in
and got their boat back on the trailer !!!!! (see gallery)
5-11-07. Leon has just had his monthly boat trip with Cyril on 'Blue
Lady'. They fished on the Whiting ground to the West of Beer and
had plenty of Whiting to around 1-8-0. Other fish caught included
Garfish and BIG Mackerel, with most on board having them to around
1-8-0/1-12-0. The best fish of the day fell to Cyril, whilst
fishing for bait he had a Mackerel when weighed ashore weighed 2-7-0 !!!
NICE ONE CYRIL!!
15-11-07. Mike Spiller and friends have just returned from a
weeks fishing in Alderney, whilst there Mike managed a few hours boat
fishing and hooked a good Bass of 11-9-8 on a sinking Plug. In all
there were around a dozen fish caught to the plugs, mostly around the
4lb-6lb range.
Not sure how anglers know but there is a new tackle shop open in
Honiton in Black Lion Court. Its called Otter Country Sports and
its run By Neil Loomes. Pop in some time and have a look, there
were Peeler and Ragworm as well as the normal frozen bait on offer last
weekend.
